Read Deeply
We read deeply for varied reasons, most of them familiar:
that we cannot know enough people profoundly enough;
that we need to know ourselves better;
that we require knowledge, not just of self and others,
but of the way things are. --Harold Bloom

example's bookblog for 'The Hidden Family '

Progress: 3/4 through
I don't remember the first Merchant Princes book being this business heavy. I know from Charlie's other work and his blog that he's very interested in business and business theory, for lack of another phrase. I like how he puts that stuff in this book without doing big infodumps or those fake encyclopedia entries that a lot of fantasy books use. I'm still a bigger fan of his science fiction but this is turning into a very cool, light reading kind of series. I'm glad to see him stretching his muscles and making a go of a hard genre to get right.

The only thing I find fault with is that Miriam seems a bit too quick. She's a big business genius and she also finds all these inventions to bring to the other worlds. Oh well, I can deal with it.

I hope the impact of Miriam's meddling on the culture of the other worlds is explored in later books. I'm sure it will be but I hope Charlie doesn't gloss over the turmoil and upheaval that inevitably comes with these big changes Miriam is hoping to make, especially since she seems determined to make those changes happen extra quickly. In the short term she could become very unpopular.
